Drew
Barrymore
All-Star Ranking:
Born February 22,
1975, Drew Blyth Barrymore was destined for stardom.
At the age of 11 months, her mother Jaid began
taking Drew to TV auditions. An actress was born
when Drew starred in her first television
appearance--a commercial for Gainesburger Puppy ood.
Over the next several
years, Drew grew into a charming and imaginative
child. Her smile was dazzling and her personality
catching. At the age of six Drew auditioned for
Steven Spielberg's Poltergeist. Spielberg felt that
the role was not for her, but instead she landed a
big role as Gertie in E.T. The Extra-terrestrial.
She was a
hit--audiences loved her. She made several
television appearances, such as The Tonight Show and
as the youngest host of Saturday Night Live. She was
center-stage--the spotlight was hers, and with that
came a lot of stress and self-doubt. The world
rested on Drew's shoulders, and eventually it all
became too much to bear.
At the young age of nine, Drew became a victim of
drugs and alcohol. Yet, Drew pressed on. She went on
to star in three additional films. Sadly, the films
not only increased her fame, but also added to her
problems. By the age of thirteen she hit rock
bottom. Drew was out of control and something had to
be done.
On June 28, 1988, a
life-changing decision was made. Drew was checked
into ASAP Family Treatment Center by her mother.
After years of self-destruction, Drew was finally on
the road to recovery. However, it was not an easy
one to travel. Not only did she have to recover from
her drug abuse, but she also had to rebuild her
professional career. Her biggest step was publishing
an autobiography entitled Little Girl Lost at the
age of fourteen. Drew started making a comeback.
From coffee houses to after-school specials and
low-budget films, she finally found herself back on
the big screen.
